Message 103872 - Posted: 21 Dec 2021, 18:25:20 UTC

I am often getting errors like this in BOINC... This one is at 12/21/2021 8:33:24 AM:

Rosetta@home: Notice from server
rosetta python projects needs 10698.97MB more disk space. You currently have 8374.52 MB available and it needs 19073.49 MB.

This is pretty ridiculous. A single work unit requires nearly 20 GB of disk space??

Here are my BOINC disk settings:
- Use no more than 10 GB
- Leave at least 1 GB free
- Use no m ore than 50% of total

The project has finally downloaded work units and is running them, but I've had months of no work and getting this error with various large numbers for disk space needed.

No computers listed under your username. What applications are you running and any other projects? 10Gb is very small for a resource.
You need to provide more details on your setup.

I guess I'm comparing to World Community Grid, which takes up less than 1 GB of disk usage.

My hardware:
Intel Core 2 DUO E8500 @ 3.16 GHz
RAM: 6 GB
Disk: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB

My software:
Windows 10 Pro, version 21H2, 64-bit
BOINC Manager 7.16.11 (x64)

And still our response is the same- the account you have logged on with here to post is not the same as the one your computer is using- there are no computers of any type doing any work under the account you are posting with.

Normal Rosetta 4.20 Tasks only require a few hundred MB of disk space, and on average 1.3GB of RAM (although it's often a lot less, it can be quite a bit more).
Python Tasks run using a Virtual Machine & over 7.5GB of Disk space is required for each Task and copy of the Virtual Machine image used to process it. Each Python Task also requires at least 3GB of RAM to run (although it actually uses much less).

Well, I don't understand why my account does not show any computers here. My BOINC manager definitely shows that I'm connected to Rosetta@home as "poscogrubb", and the combined stats here https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/show_user.php?userid=2096106 show that my PC has connected and actually submitted results. How do I fix this?

That is a different User ID to the one you are posting here with (2368384).
Logging out of your present account, then logging back in using the email/password for the other account will sort that out.

The one that shows your computer looks like your original account (16 Mar 2020). This one is one you've created more recently (21 Dec 2021).

OK, I'm getting the same message, but you dont seem to have answered the original question, why the message from the Rosetta server saying needs more disc space?
Rosetta@home: Notice from server
rosetta python projects needs 7613.98MB more disk space. You currently have 11459.50 MB available and it needs 19073.49 MB.
10/01/2022 3:05:34 PM
Raised my disc space from 25 to 35gig after this message. Thats after raising it from the original 15 gig few days ago.
Also raised the memory allowance to 90% during use to solve the "Rosetta needs more memory" message from a few days ago.
Windows 10
4g ram
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz, 2501 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
SSD 118g, 28g free
Any recommendations?

OK, I'm getting the same message, but you dont seem to have answered the original question, why the message from the Rosetta server saying needs more disc space?
Because it needs more disk space.
This line points out exactly what the problem is.
You currently have 11459.50 MB available and it needs 19073.49 MB.
You are letting it have only 11.5GB, when it needs 19GB.

Raised my disc space from 25 to 35gig after this message. Thats after raising it from the original 15 gig few days ago.
You could set it to 500GB (if it were available), and it still wouldn't make any difference if your other disk settings result in less space actually being available.
ie
Leave at least xx GB free
Use no more than xx% of total
BOINC uses the most restrictive value. You can give BOINC as much as you like by setting the "Use no more than" value- but BOINC can't use it if the other settings result in a lower value. Check and adjust those values in order to actually let BOINC use the space you have allowed it with the "Use no more than" value.

Also raised the memory allowance to 90% during use to solve the "Rosetta needs more memory" message from a few days ago.
4g ram
Python Tasks need at least 3GB of RAM (even though they don't use nearly that much). So you will only be able to run 1 Python Task at a time, even though your CPU has 4 cores/threads.

SSD 118g, 28g free
Any recommendations?
I'd suggest seeing if you can free up more disk space- In File Explorer, right click on the Disk, select Properties, General tab, DIsk clean-up, and Clean up system files.
With only 25% free space on that drive- it's almost as good as being full.
Full SSDs go to an early grave.

i have 16gb of ram and 400+ gb of disc space. I allocate 100% to Rosetta. I downloaded Python to my computer. Nothing. So, what's the problem?

OK Thanks, seems to be running OK now. Reduced SSD to 78 used/44free, so that was indeed good advice.
Thanks again....PeterH

No idea.
What does it say in the Event log when you request work?

All previous said the same. As of today I am getting tasks marked as 4.20. Nothing using Python. Tasks are very big taking 24 +/- hrs to run.

And now as I write this, the message reads no work available to run. Why no Python tasks? I am about to say the hell with this project and go to another.

I'm talking about all of the other messages in the message log when BOINC requests work along with the single line you keep quoting.
If you don't supply the information needed to sort out the problem, then there's no way we can help you.

Tasks are very big taking 24 +/- hrs to run.
The default is 8 hours.
Since you have set them to take that long to run, then that is how long they will take, unless they come to a dead end earlier.

So, I am getting:

2/22/2022 3:25:14 PM | Rosetta@home | Message from server: rosetta python projects needs 13093.36MB more disk space. You currently have 5980.13 MB available and it needs 19073.49 MB.

I have searched the message boards for other solutions, and have not noticed any...

and current disk stats:

used by boinc: 94.2063 gb
free available to boinc 1.39 TB (confrirmed TB, and does show this available in windows file manager for the disk: 1.38 TB free space)
used by other programs 253 gb

Also in config, settings are to use all available disk space...

So, 1,390,000 MB available to boinc... I wonder if there is an issue with GB vs TB space calcuations, and or the size of digit... (long vs long long....

Try this post.

Basically in your storage settings
Use no more than - 500 GB . . [the total size of my disk its on , this is so I can run 45 work units together , [I have now seen Rosetta using up to 352GB of disk and 80GB of RAM] don't worry about setting this BIG.
Leave at least ## GB free . . [untick this box not needed]
Use no more than ## % of total . . [untick this box not needed]
