It has tried to download more, with the same result, I have 16 stuck right now. I've set no new tasks for the time being. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

It has tried to download more, with the same result At the risk of putting a curse on myself...I see that the download server is...well down, and has been for days. But I've been downloading tasks for several days now, within the last half-hour on this computer. If you guys are running Windows is there a chance that your hosts file has been "fixed" again? ![]() |

I just searched my "disk" for files called "hosts". It found a collection of entries that contained "hosts", but only two called, simply, "hosts". Both had a dozen or so lines of comments, but nothing else, and neither looked to be placed in directories that seemed applicable to the system here. One in the system32 chain, this system is a 64 bit, the other in an amd directory, this system has an i7. I'm curious about the suggestion actually, what did you mean when you said "fixed"? What % of cpu/threads are you setting your BoincMgr at? Thank you. Proud member of the O.F.A. (Old Farts Association) |

If you guys are running Windows is there a chance that your hosts file has been "fixed" again? As I mentioned earlier, the problem is configuration of these web servers. And nothing has changed since that moment. The problem will not "resolve" by itself, until the admins of these hosts restore TLS 1.2 support. |

Okay, I can see now, what was meant. The tasks will timeout tomorrow. I have no new tasks set. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Well with the download server not running no one is getting work now. That’s the point, we are getting work and have been throughout. |

That’s the point, we are getting work and have been throughout. Yep, when I look at the Statistics in the boincmanager for Rosetta it's pretty much a 45degree straight line from June 1 to July 1. I still think there's something wrong with their hosts file. But I can't help the Windows people, the last time I dealt with Windows was back around 2003 when I was taking care of some NT servers. Since then my exposure to it has been: 1. Buy computer with Windows pre-installed. 2. Plug in a DVD with linux on it (now days it's a USB). 3. Boot device and scrub the drive before installing linux on the computer. The last 5 computers were assembled by me anyhow, blank slate. ![]() |

I saw a note, (project home page I think), which says they are moving away from BOINC for regular work, and only produce short running studies etc. in future. There are probably enough Linux crunchers to cope with that, without the need for producing and supporting their Windows system. If that is how they want it, and can get their work done, in house or with Linux based BOINCers, good luck to them. I'm probably wrong, and maybe someone can correct me, but...I don't think it works exactly like that. A task is put out for people to work on, and whoever grabs it, with whatever OS they're using, processes it with the boinc software they've downloaded and installed for their flavor of the OS. I do see things getting real picky about what kind of GPU is installed, nothing I have has a (functional?) GPU in it so I'm not that familiar with it. ![]() |

Seemed to me that People with Windows machines are unable to complete the downloading of tasks. Certainly was my experience. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Many months ago some wise person, dunno recall who it was, wrote that adding the line: 128.95.160.156 boinc-files.bakerlab.org to the hosts file would resolve the transient HTTP error. From some comments the Windows people did and things were working fine, then there was some sort of a patch put out by MS which removed the line from the hosts file. So they had to go back in and add it again. I didn't pay any attention to the how and where since my hosts file is in /etc and I used vi to edit it. Like I said, I don't know if this is the problem. Just that at one time (maybe twice) it was a reason Windows computers weren't getting tasks, and TBH neither was I until I added the line. Now days it seems like Cloudflare is getting it's nose in the way of everything, me using a VPN that bounces me all over the globe doesn't help either. ![]() |

I, also, use a VPN. I have disabled it, removed "no new tasks" and will see if that makes any difference. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

It is irksome that the scheduler gave me a new workunit today, but the downloading it to my machine fails because the download server is down. As of this posting (and the past several days): Download server boinc-files.bakerlab.org Not Running Remote daemon status as of 2 Jul 2025, 22:10:06 UTC |
