Whenever I start BOINC manager I get the message "BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. Would you like to try to connect again?" Each following attempt results with the same message. My internet connection is fine, and the problem is not connected to firewall (shut down, same results). I also tried to re-install BOINC client. No luck. Any help? |

"Network activity allways available" as it used to be. Problem stays. Using BOINC version 5.2.13 on Windows XP SP1, also using ADSL connection over router, if it matters... |

This message relates to the manager and client on your PC, so your network and internet connection aren't really involved at that point. The clients run in the background and use sockets connections to communicate with the BOINC Manager. So it does use TCP/IP sockets connections, but not out to the internet. It uses this to get the status of the client as it's running on it's work units. Obviously internet is used for contacting the project hosts and for exchanging WUs and results. But, as I say, you aren't that far into startup yet. I've had this happen every once and a great while. Fortunately in my case, I'm usually able to just shutdown BOINC and fire it back up and the connections are reesatblished ok. Did you just install BOINC on this PC? Or was it working previously? Do any projects show in the projects tab of the BOINC manager? Have you attached to projects yet? Based on the info you have provided the problem is internal to your system. The information that there is a loop back connection that is used by BOINC is correct. It uses two specific ports for this purpose. Right off hand I can't remember which two, but I do know that one of those ports which was reserved for BOINC has recently been used by windows. Because of that BOINC now uses different ports. There is document in the unofficial BOINC WIKI about this issue and how to fix it. Thank you both very much for your troubles. All of a sudden, all seems to work just fine, after two days of delay. I haven't done ANYTHING considering this problem and this thing works! Just to answer Feet1st's questions 1. I had BOINC working for several days propperly. 2. None of the projects were showing (I had only one) |
