Hi. I'm using windows XP and whenever I try to download some work units, they immediately abort with a computation error. On clicking the rosetta_4.07_windows_intelx86.exe file, I get the dreaded not a valid windows 32 application I tried modifying both executables with a hex editor, by changing the 00 00 00 06 in the PE header to 00 00 00 05 to make it win32 compatible, but it caused a signature failure and it just redownloaded the files again. The system requirements say online that the program will run on windows versions earlier than 7 or Vista. Is it possible to get boinc to skip the signature check? Thanks. |

My question is why are you using windows Xp? |

I'd like to know why you are answering a question with a question. There are those of us who, for a variety of reasons, still use Windows XP on our computing contribution rigs, so the original question still stands: Why does Rosetta v4.07 not support Windows XP? Visual Studio 15 has an option to include support for it, so was this simply an unintentional oversight? |

Sorry if I sounded irritated in my previous reply... After having contributed to SETI@home for 20+ years, it has run out of data to process, and I was hoping to shift my contributions to Rosetta@home. This, unfortunately, is not currently possible, because my computation rig runs Windows XP, and the latest 32-bit build of Rosetta (v4.07) was not compiled with XP compatibility turned on. These two pages still maintain that Windows XP is supported, however: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/apps.php https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/List_of_projects_by_system_requirements If anyone hears of Windows XP support being restored to Rosetta@home, please respond here. Thank you. |

I hope they will not restore support for an official EOL (end of life, dead, dangerous, outdated, do-not-use, extremely easy to hack) operating system. If you want a free OS to upgrade to on old hardware: there are a load of open source OS systems available. |

... a very old post ... OP March 2019 ! Seems like the admins or developers had no interest to respond or fix it, but NOW they are asking US for support !!! But, your reaction was perfect. You did not sound irritated to me in that previous post. XP32 was/is a very good system. Fast and little overhead. One can use it to do crunching on a seperate PC (not connected to a home network), which is not for daily use. As long there is no other work being done on it, its's fine. No hacking in my past 14 (!) years - bought back then a couple of spare boards to support it for a long time. Besides, Avira works fine on it - yes, old but keeps out bad boys. PLEASE. no discussions ... Just reactivated this project to see how XP32 does nowadays - may be of interest to you or others. Well, the ROSETTA 4.15 WUs error out immediately: Computation error Compute error Exit status -185 (0xFFFFFF47) ERR_RESULT_START <core_client_version>7.14.2</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> couldn't start app: CreateProcess() failed - (unknown error)</message> ]]> The Event Log says: Process creation failed: (unknown error) - error code 193 (0xc1) --------> But, the miniROSSETA 3.78 WUs run nicely. <--------------- They (3 WUs) gave me from 180 to 200 credits - runt time about 4 hours (intel i5-3570) -- like I had requested. ======================================================================================================= I will try XP64 and post back. |

Process creation failed is generally specific to the machine, such as authorities or anti-virus. I mean, that doesn't sound like an error indicating that XP is not supported to me. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

Same problem on XP64 (which was expected). @Mod.Sense: THANKS for your reply and the GOOD tip. I will try to check what could be the issue. Have a nice day ... |

Well, checked everything and re-tried running Rosetta. I'm now not using ANY anti-virus programm and running BOINC + rosetta with admin account Mini-rosetta works - as before, but rosetta does not. I don't think this is a problem on our side. No error messages from windows xp or elsewhere .... OF COURSE XP IS SUPPORTED - just does not work for rosetta... since we can't select which of the two apps to run, we have to stop crunching and go back to the other projects, Thanks for your help. |

Well, I'm facing similar errors on my XP-machine. The mini rosettas are fine, but full Rosetta end with the reported error. For me XP is still ok, since this OS is my favorite despite the warnings etc. But I'll install W7 or W10 on a separate HDD as a test for the Rosetta pieces at the home machine. At my office machine, which are running on W10 all of the tasks are running. It's a bit sad that rosetta@home isn't compatible to pure number crunching without any limitations for older OS. All this new fancy stuff is in most cases pure camoflage and it's not really better. My company machines (semiconductor production fab) has still W2000 or XP computers at production machines and we are satisfied with them. Shifts to W7 or W10 often generate speed and performance problems, since other qualities are needed like interfacing with CAN buses or even RS232. Also video links of cameras are not as stable as in former OS, when the software guys are more aware of the needs and not educated in the app world. A striking example are the strange error messages of rosetta@home like those error codes which do not give you an hint on the real reason for their appearence. Why is there not a message like "is not running on XP oder Win32"? That's the typical way of "modern" coding! |
