While installing BOINC I get an error message:

"error 1920.Service BOINC (BOINC) failed to start.
Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

Help?

Some information on your setup (eg. Boinc version and Operating system)

But basically your trying to install as a service and you have not provided the correct password for the user (or you've entered no password, though correct the service cannot allow this)

You'll either need to use one of the alternate installs OR manually change the BOINC service to Local System.
(you'll find how to do this in the Boinc Wiki)

It's a Windows limitation.

this is the link you'll need (though it's about enabling graphics it's the same process)
http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Enabling_The_Graphics_Capability_of_the_BOINC_Client_Software_for_a_Service_Type_Installation

That or you do not have administrative privelige rights (e.g. a work computer often doesn't). So you'll need to select a different install type.

Alright, I'm pretty sure I have the solution, it at least fixed it for me a few minutes ago. Providing you have an administrator account, complete the following steps:

Leave open the install with the "do you want to retry, blah blah blah"
Go to Start -> Run
In the box type "services.msc" (Without the quotes, as computer standards would encourage me to say)
Right click on the service named "BOINC", go to properties
Click the Log On tab
Under "Log on as:" check "Local system account"
Click OK, and close the Services window
Go back to the BOINC install and get it to retry the service startup.

Which is exactly what I do every time during installation, though I also tick the "Allow service to interact with desktop" so the graphics part works.
And a pictorial flow is in the link I provided ;-)
