Rosetta steals processor time from other BOINC apps you might want to run. I question their entire organization. Quit rosetta today, before they corrupt your computer. so bogus. who knows what they are actually doing. |

Quit rosetta today, before they corrupt your computer. so bogus. who knows what they are actually doing. What is your evidence? Rosetta can take no more than YOU set it to take as defined by the BOINC programmers themselves. Especially given the fact that Release Manager of the BOINC application has helped/is still helping program Rosetta for the BOINC platform (i.e. Rom Walton). What you may see is a side effect of the current short deadline used here at rosetta@home of 7 days, this will mean if there is other work from another project that has a longer time deadline it will run at the later day, i.e. moved down the timeline queue. But that work will still be done and it will all balance out as YOU have defined in YOUR preferences for the projects you run. Team mauisun.org |

Yo ho ho ho!!!! The only reason someone would make such a post is to get attention. You see this on the conspiracy theory discussion boards more than any other place on the web. This guy has a problem with social boundaries and is a fraud. Let him rant all he wants. For everyone else, this should be the last post anyone makes on this discussion other than the original nut who started this mess. Cheers and happy rosetta crunching! To me it sounds more as if he didn't understand the BOINC concept of time slices instead of parallel ressource sharing. Many people ask about that when they attach to their second project and wonder why the new project grabs all CPU time while the old one is sleeping. The style of his thread starter sounds very trollish though, usually people ask first instead of ranting. |

Well he did ask in the other part of the board few people actually read, you know that Q&A section :-) and he has been sending in results for a month now. A proper troll would have no results. ;-) Team mauisun.org |

Perhaps someone will post links to the sections of the FAQ that discuss the issues that this fellow is not understanding? If one person is posting questions or concerns about Rosetta's behavior - there's no doubt others that have similar questions and concerns and aren't posting them. Granted, he's gone overboard on his claims - but we should still post an explanation for how Rosetta works so others can see how it works, and be able to explain that to their friends/teammates/fellow Rosetta project member. |

Quit rosetta today, before they corrupt your computer. so bogus. who knows what they are actually doing. He's right, it's all a comspiracy by the Vulcans. They don't want us dedicating processing time to more importand projects like SETI, they (the Vulcan's) don't want us to discover them, or the Romulans or the Klingons. The Vulcans think that if we discover the Romulans, it may lead to an Earth/Romulan Empire war, or worse. And Rosetta may already be run by mad scientist who are bent on developing new biological weapons, and lead to a Eugenics War in which genetically modified humans will try to become the "Master Race." We must all abandon Rosetta immediately, or the whole future of the Federation may be at stake... |

"...this is a test. This is only a test of the Rosetta help desk inquiry network. Had this been an actual help desk inquiry, non-threatening questions would be asked and objective symptoms would be reported to help bring satisfactory resolution to any problems a participant might be having. In the event of an actual inquiry, answers, references, and follow-up questions will be posted. ...this concludes this test of the Rosetta help desk inquiry network." What I find interesting is that this person has not responded to anyone in this thread. Oh well, you cannot please everyone. |

They don't want us dedicating processing time to more importand projects like SETI Of course I catch the "subtle" sarcasm of this post, but it is actually kind of sad that SETI gets as much resources as they do. IMHO SETI is one of the least scientific and one of the most worthless projects out there. That being said SETI has done two incredibly important things. They basically got BOINC started and have been generous to allow real science to use their framework. Finally they have done something none of these other projects have done and that is release the source code to their app. That alone is the only reason I run their project, as getting any of the other projects to work on my OpenBSD box is not worth it. I wish more projects would open source their apps as science is about collaboration and sharing that benefits mankind as a whole. |

You can try SIMAP which is also a biochemistry project. It has clients for several UNIX systems including OpenBSD. |

That being said SETI has done two incredibly important things. They basically got BOINC started and have been generous to allow real science to use their framework. Finally they have done something none of these other projects have done and that is release the source code to their app. Three things. Before they did either of those, they taught the world what distributed computing is. Without SETI and everyone having a freind who's looking for aliens we would still be stuck explaining how work can be done across squillions of boxes on the net. Nowadays if you start to explain Rosetta or Einstein or whatever, the response is "oh like SETI you mean". Never underestimate the value of PR. ~~gw |
