I have two work units going at once. Is this because I have a core duo?

I notice that the UD Agent only uses one core (the other is idle) when running FA@H.

BTW, should I wait until a current work unit is finished before I switch FA@H from the UD client to BOINC (I want to only run BOINC, not two separate apps).

Hi UCLAJD,

yes, BOINC automatically uses two CPUs if you have a multi-core or multi-cpu machine. In the General Preferences in your account the default setting for the point "On multiprocessors, use at most" is 2. If you have more CPUs or cores you need to adjust that. You can of course also set this point to "1" and have only one core crunch.

You do not necessarily have to wait until a WU is finished as BOINC sets breakpoints once in a while. However, the best to do is to set the point "Leave applications in memory while preempted?" (also in the General Preferences) to "Yes". Your current status is then written to the swap file and the calculations will begin where you stopped them.

This is of course not the case, if you terminate BOINC totally before running the UD Agent. The calculation will then resume after the breakpoint. So if that is the way you handle the switching you'll be better off in the long run to let both applications work for longer times uninterruptedly to get the most of the clock cycles invested.

Regards,

Christoph

Thanks Christoph. All is well. Going to build a Conroe system soon that will (inter alia) crank out the work units. Right now, my lappy Core Duo is doing most of the work (Pentium desktop is too hot to leave on all night in my bedroom, LOL!).
