Reading through the message boards, I often find myself thinking, "I remember when this wasn't even an issue," or, "I wonder what the people who have been around forever think." So maybe this won't be a popular idea, but... I'm wondering what the people who were around near the beginning of the project have to say about the project as it stands now, and how they would finish the sentence "I remember when..." I'm still constantly impressed with Rosetta (especially after CPDN shut down the Mac version), and with the project scientists who so patiently continue to answer our questions and deal with our petty squabbles. Kudos. |

I remember when the squabbles were about "why don't they fix the 1% bug SOONER?", and "why are there no graphics yet?" ...so to have made it to where the main squabble is over magnetic numbers on a server's disk that have no real meaning or value... seems we've come a long way. I remember all the fuss about leaving app in memory. Seems so long ago now :) Anders n |

Bill Michael getting harassed because I left the "Can I move work from one computer to another?" answer in the Q&A. FAD joining and Paul D. Buck leaving. That the Rosetta@Home source code would be released. It does seem a long time ago, doesn't it. Oh for a perfect world! I feel guilty that I didn't warn the R@H team that credits would be a big thing, not that they may have believed me, but still, I knew and should of warned them. I think I was hoping that if I shut my eyes really tightly and tried my best to make the forum weloming it would go away (point and laugh at stupid hugo now :) ) I'm not sure Dr D.B. will ever again post on the board (outside of the journal), once bitten etc.. the science it just too important, that's a real shame. |

As for the source code: I think it was as in 'really open source' (Since its technically always been open source ;-). i.e. Just place on the website or in a CVS somewhere for all and anyone to 'mess' with. Though that sort of information should be in the https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_science_faq.php Science FAQ for all to see. Having been one of the people that tried to persuade Find-a-Drug folk to come across to here back in Novemeber and also bringing my team with me I can say. The forums are still confusing, they never quite been improved though a layout has been tested at Ralph. We end up with to many stickies and and the Q&A has never really been closed, though no one really seems to use the Q&A section. Overall the ACTUAL communication from project staff is far far better, the science talk and involvment has come on leaps and bounds. Though you'll never get David Baker to be that chatty in here ;-) Luckily we have the other staff for that. The client (rosetta program itself) has come on very well from a stability point of view, though I have recently had client errors, but they should be collecting that in their logs. Nothing show stopping. The improvment in file transfer sizes has improved well (both setting run length and actuall decreased file size). Probably could still be improved, though may need BOINC to do that. Over all it's a much better project than it was. (bar the few bumps it's having at the moment ;-)) Team mauisun.org |

The very begining of R@H was actually extremely stable! I remember being incredably impressed with the ease my computer processed the workunits. No graphics back then though. This initial stability and the very friendly forums was what brought most of the users at the time into the project. So you can imagine the SHOCK we all had that last week of December when we all saw our workunits crash and burn over and over for the next weeks. |

I came over as part of the first wave of FaD exiles, and I ran UD-Think for a year or two before that. Think i've been quite lucky with Rosetta - i've only ever noticed one stuck at 1% on any of my machines! I've had two remotes running since late last year and early this year - both on pretty much 24/7 and I haven't had to touch either of them! Its had teething problems along the way, but nothing major in the grand scheme of things. Great project with a very bright future ;). |

I remember commenting on the planetary explorer "model", suggesting that there were geological processes in planetary topology which were not present in proteins, and vice versa which made the analogy somewhat dubious. I also remember one of my earliest science board discussion when Dr. Baker and I talked about the benefits of having non-biologists look at the data. My point being that outsiders, without the "baggage" of fore knowledge, may be able to see the wood in the trees. It was a happier board back then. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

I still look back with fond memories at one of my first posts, where I was quite confused about the flexible WU runtimes, and Mod9 gently pointed me to the correct FAQ, which sounded unrelated if you read the Q, but did answer the question. Been trying to help make Rosetta better ever since. Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. The very begining of R@H was actually extremely stable! I remember being incredably impressed with the ease my computer processed the workunits. No graphics back then though. This initial stability and the very friendly forums was what brought most of the users at the time into the project. Yes, when you first found out to leave the WU in memory while preempted. Back then the WU's varied a lot in time and size, so my first WU went fine, extremely unliniar but it finished well and was reported and granted credit. And then the next about 4 WU's crashed one by one, it was the "leave in memory while preempted" bug that stroke! So when I had that one solved, they started to run fine again, except for those which died of the 1% bug. And yes, I remember the first graphic WU I had. I had it opened the whole time, and I was watching it most of the time. It looked good, it was more bright in the colors than today, as they changed the colorscheme. I liked the more bright colors back then. :-( And the "Christmas bug", oh my God! All those which crashed one by one and were sent out all 11 times! I started to babysit my cache to check if the WU's I had were among those, so I aborted them before start. What a mess that waited for David Kim after his season holiday. And poor Moderator9 was busy those days, more busy than usual. And yes, I also remember how Bill Michaels was attacked, so he left. He did a good job, so what a shame. :-( "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

I think I was completely mesmerized by the graphic. For the first couple of weeks, I would turn my laptop screen so that I could see the screensaver as I fell asleep at night. Pretty sure that puts me well over the fine gray line that marks the nerd barrier. |

I also remember when Feet1st got his pic. I'm still jealous. |

My pic? You mean the avitar? You know, I just rotated the native form of one of the proteins and spun it around and hit this point that looked totally symmetric and then sliced and diced a screen capture of the Rosetta graphic to just be that native corner of the display :) ...so I stole if from Rosetta :) I WISH I had noted WHICH protein it was. I think maybe it was a 1tul. YOU can make one of your own, with a protein that you like, by following the directions here. Right. I've fiddled around with all that but... 1) I'm jealous that you beat me to a good idea 2) I haven't come across any proteins that struck me as particularly nice the way your avatar does 3) I haven't come across any other pics that I want to use for an avatar The moral of the story: I'm jealous because I had three months headstart and now 8 months later, I still have nothing. Here, as a token of goodwill... I think it's an HIV protein model: Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. But running Rosetta@home just might! https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ |

Thanks, but let's review #1 from previous post. ;) EDIT: Sorry about double... uh... triple posting there. Didn't mean to - don't know what happened. |
