The following error occurs on my system: As soon as the first Rosetta WU got transferred to my System, I tried viewing the output. My system paused (completely unresponsive for about 30 seconds), then my ATI driver reported that the graphics system had been resetted because it did not respond to graphics commands any more. I could not click ok, because before I could, the same thing happened again. After about 5 resets, the system BSODed, destroying - among others - my registry. As I incrementally backup at the beginning of each week, I was able to restore the system from the server. I did not loose any data. This ONLY and ALWAYS occurs when I try to view the Rosetta Client. My System: AMD Athlon64 3700+ 1 GB RAM MSI Mainboard with NF4 chipset Sapphire ATI X850 GTO (or X800 GTO, not sure) with 256 MB VRAM Latest BOINC Latest ATI Catalyst Driver Steps necessary to reproduce the crash: Open Boinc-Manager Select "Rosetta" from "Tasks" (German: Aufgaben) Click "Show Graphics" (German: Grafik anzeigen) -> Crash Only once was I quick enough to hide the Graphics before 5 resets. This did not lead to a crash, but the graphics system obviously defaulted to some value (Seems like framebuffer to me), because scrolling a website now takes several seconds per step and draws the new image over the old one from top to bottom (visibly, redraw takes a second or so). The system seemed to be stable again, but I opted to restart to resolve the graphics issues. After the restart, no damage to the system was detected, so the destruction of system files might be caused by something happening during the crash. I have now removed Rosetta from my list of projects. No other project is causing similar problems. |

Hi Sebs, welcome to Rosetta. You are experiencing the ATI-related problems many users have reported with Rosetta (and with other projects, it is a random error, sometimes only one project is affected, sometimes more). The only way to circumvent that is to not use the graphics under Rosetta (or of course not run Rosetta, so basically there are two options). No true fix has been found so far and the problem is unnerving quite a lot of people. So it is up to you to decide whether you use Rosetta without graphics or not at all. I am sorry that I cannot tell you anything more positive in the case. Regards, Christoph |

Hi Sebs, Thanks. I actually suspected the card. I hate it already. I bought it used from a friend, so it was quite cheap (40 EUR). I have found a few references to similar failures in the forums, but none actually quoted their graphics specs, so I couldn't be sure. I actually regret buying that card, and for christmas, I am gonna get myself a new nVidia card. So far, the card has caused me nothing but trouble. It took me a week (on and off) to get the card to work under Debian, and even now the darn thing is not completely configured under Linux. I used to run a GF4 Ti-4600, and it worked brilliantly under both Linux and Windows. Now, the catastrophic failure under a simple graphics client is just the final straw. The darn thing was a complete waste of money. When I get a new card, I am gonna take it to work and put it to some stresstesting with the heavy-duty shredder. Take that, ATI. |

Hi Sebs, Do you know what graphics driver version you are using ? And make sure you are using the latest DirectX9.0c version (not all 9.0c's are the same, good old microsoft) http://www.microsoft.com/directx/ Team mauisun.org |
