Is it possible to have R@H run completely behind-the-scenes? Ideally, I'd like the only way to see the results of my computer on the R@H site.

BTW, Not sure if this maters but I will be running this on a new (60 day old) but pretty generic PC.

When you install BOINC, it askes you to select an installation type. You can select "single user", shared, or service. If you don't intend to view the graphics etc. then perhaps you want to run it as a service.

I should point out that if your intention is to hide the fact that BOINC is running from the owner of this PC, then you are not following the project guidelines about ONLY running on machines YOU own.

There can be some delay as the Operating System swaps memory, I'm guessing less than 10 seconds on your computers, though I'm not sure on the Mac. After that you should not notice the difference at all.

I.e. The computer just tends to feel slugish for a little while (~10 sec), then everything is back up to speed.

I believe that installing BOINC as a service you will not see any icons, Mac may be different.

If it is installed as a service then you need to (which computer is it https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/hosts_user.php?userid=6198 )

When you installed it you should have ticked, do not start boinc at startup, this maybe counter intuative but it is actually refering to BOINCManager the icon in the corner and the bit you see what it going on. Boinc will still be running. (I'll check this on the latest development version and bring it up as a userbility problem).

But since it is all installed, then go to the start menu and the STARTUP folder in there, remove the reference to BOINC Manager.


If it is the AthlonXP 2200+ with onyl 256MB of memory you will notice the effect of Rosetta@home, you should really have 512MB+ to run rosetta on a computer you use.
If it is the Turion with 1GB of memory then you may as well give it a different location e.g. (work) tick the leave application in memory to yes, and work while in use. You will not notice it.

Try it once it is hidden and see if the wife says anything ;) Other than here laptop fans are always on :-s
