Greetings. Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find it.

I just tonight installed for the 1st time both SETI & Rosetta. First on a Powerbook, and all runs fine, with SETI and Rosetta splitting the time, one running at a time.

I then installed both on a dual G5. I notice that SETI is running 2 different tasks (one has been preempted). However, Rosetta has one task only which is running concurrently with the one SETI task.

I am assuming these tasks are taking one processor each, correct?

Why does Rosetta only have one task?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Yes, BOINC will schedule which projects run and when. Because you have a dual processor, BOINC will schedule two work units to run at the same time, one on each processor. These two work units may be from the same project, or different projects, but you will only have two tasks actually running for all of your BOINC projects.

Note, even if you set the resource shares to 50/50 between two projects, it does not assure that you will always be running one SETI and one Rosetta work unit. For example, SETI's server may not be available when it is time to get more work, and BOINC may crunch on Rosetta for a while on both CPUs. Then later, when SETI comes back online and work is available, it may crunch SETI on both CPUs to repay what BOINC calls "debt".

Over time, BOINC will assure that the two projects get the 50/50 share you have specified. And, much of the time that will probably mean you have one task from each project running at the same time. But not always.

So, the direct answer to your question is that Rosetta only has one task actively running, because there is a SETI task running. If you were to suspend the SETI task manually, BOINC would look at the work available and the relative debt of the two projects and decide what to work on instead of the task you suspended.

after a short time running both projects you will see, that the Mac client for Rosetta is extremely inefficient compared to the Windows or Linux clients. A workunit on a G5 takes almost twice as long as on a comparable Intel or AMD (and therefore you only receive half the credits/hour).

In the old days before - they changed the credit system - this was adjusted for by the BOINC client, but not anymore. Therefore I quit Rosetta.

That's why I quit SETI and switched to Rosetta. Now that they're doing the same I'm tempted to quit this. Seems like the only way to get a response it to vote with our "feet" by leaving. Perhaos afte the loss of enough clints d]they will respond. After all, what does it cost them to grant credit? It costs me about $10.00 per month for extra electricity to keep 3 computers running 24 / 7, two of which are dedicated to this project.
Nothing like looking a gift horse in the mouth and bad mouthing the length of the teeth to the giver.
