First game press I've seen:

http://www.technologyreview.com/Biotech/20738/?a=f

The game, called Foldit, is part of Baker's vision for the future of protein engineering. His algorithms are good at the nitty-gritty of generating completely novel protein sequences for a particular purpose. But humans, who are better at seeing the big picture than computers are, could improve computer-designed proteins by playing the game.

Here's another one with different details:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080508122520.htm

Beginning in the fall, Foldit problems will expand to involve creating new proteins that we might wish existed -- enzymes that could break up toxic waste, for example, or that would absorb carbon dioxide from the air.

...this week, however, the developers will open the game to the public and offer proteins of unknown shapes. Also starting this week, Foldit gamers will face off against research groups around the world in a major protein-structure competition held every two years.

and we would translate the game

Possible ?

I've created a Fold It media coverage clearinghouse. If you know of any big coverage not mentioned, let me know.

Cheers, and happy folding!

There's a PILE of links to the press on the "about" page on the game website.

Thanks Feet1st, I should've thought about that... I'll go check it out when I can access the site (timing out right now).

How do I delete my account on Fold It? (I've uninstalled the app from my PC, but I don't see how to get my userID / email address deleted from the Fold It site.)

CASP8 results posted for the models submitted by the http://Fold.it players.

...the preliminary conclusion by biochemist is that foldit players are on par, but not better than protein folding experts at trying to solve the same problem with all tools available to them. It also appears that foldit outperformed all fully automated server submissions.

...I'll take on par, thank you. Not bad for a "game"!

Fold.it players will soon be designing proteins that will interact with HIV. And, as you may already know, if you can interact with it, you often disable it.

To quote Zoran Popović, Principal Investigator of the Fold It! Project...
We are particularly excited about this new chapter in foldit evolution because there are practically no automated methods for protein design -- you will be primarily competing with the biochemistry experts to find the best novel protein structures. In my view, I think foldit players will likely provide even greater advancement to science with design problems. The best part is that each set of puzzles will be focusing on a different target, such as an HIV virus. The best scoring proteins will then be synthesized in the biochemistry lab in order to confirm it's folding structure and the protein function.

and to further quote Zoran's comments in response to concerns about who owns the results of the above discovery...
The whole point of foldit is to democratize the process of scientific discovery. we will always strive towards public ownership of any findings produced by the game.

The above from the Fold.it! blog.

If you have not already been playing Fold.it, you will want to familiarize yourself with how it works, so you are ready to incorporate the new protein design tools into your gameplay when these changes are rolled out in the weeks ahead.

THIS is exactly what they were talking about when Fold.it! was announced last year, and the press said things like "who knows? you might even win a Nobel prize!" ...just by playing a "game", which is actually very interesting, challenging and fun.

Question: How much will fold.it improve the algorithms used by Rosetta@home?

Fold.it has posted the new version with the protein design capabilities. Really cool! See if you can make a design that tops 10,000 points.

Learning how the game works really helps you see what the scientists in BakerLab are dealing with. There are so many factors that effect the scoring it is very challenging to predict what effects a given change will have once the entire structure reacts to the change.

Whoo hooo! Just cracked the top 50 scores on the design challenge! This is really interesting. Looks like it would be entirely possible for modify the sidechains as the thing folds and end up with a really high scoring design that might not even be possible to make in the real world. :) but that hasn't helped me beat Pletsch yet!

The lesson of gamification, and Foldit, is that previously insurmountable problems can be shattered simply by offering the right tools and making the quest for a solution fun.

I tried Foldit many months ago, but haven't seen a suitable place to report a problem I found with it before. In the problems for new users, I was never able to complete one of them, and now every time I start Foldit, it tries (and fails) to give me that problem again. All but that one completed. Therefore, I cannot go on the the more useful problems for users who have finished the new user problems.

On the http://fold.it website, in the upper right hand corner, there should be a link to the Foldit forum (in the green header). There's also a "Feedback" link you can use for posting bugs.
