The Rosetta versions update automatically. You will eventually be assigned a task to be run under a new version and that will trigger downloading the appropriate executable.

The BOINC versions do not update automatically. When a new version is available a message points that out in the messages tab. Most people just check the BOINC site and get the current version every 6-12 months. Or when there is a specific fix or new feature that they want or need.
