rosetta is telling me that it has not enough free space to receive work (100.0 MB) Have now forced every value in my prefs to max (which means fill every byte on disk, use max CPU (2 CPUs) and work always.... Now it seems to do some work... let's see for how long... But I think it's not common to max out every value in the prefs to get a project working or is it? |

Not that I'm trying to poke holes in your issue..... But... You DO know the difference between SETI Classic, the BOINC Infrastructure, SETI(current), and Rosetta, yes? Because uhm.. it sounds like you kinda don't. Also... Were you with SETI Classic before it hit golden status ? (Golden, means it is a FINAL release, meaning all bugs are fixed and the software is where it was intended to be) SETI Classic had just as many problems before it went golden. Just as ALL other software. Now - I will say that SETIclassic enjoyed a long period where there was absolutely nothing wrong with the program, but absolutely nothing changed. BOINC will reach this point someitme in the near future, and it will be just as nice. However - The time for SETIClassic is over. Le Roi est Mort, Vive le roi! |

Go to your General settings....set your 'max disk space' usage up. It never will use this much space but it needs that for some reason to run. Earlier today I had this problem on a 10gig 500 mhz. I set max cpu usage to 8 or9 and it kicked right in! *edit* looks like you have already done this. Sorry for the wasted post. well my answer is Boinc is a good idea... and has a lot of difrent projects to run. the problem most people are running into right now is that the merger of Seti(boinc) and seti Clasic well it looks to me like a head on colision. yes i have run seti(pre gold) and Boinc's seti version... when it works it is neet.. but i am also running Rosetta since i think its alot more usefull of a project out there and is doing science i can see improvements in just my opinion... oh and seti clasic (even 1 month ago) had bugs and flaws.. nothing is perfect well back to crunching |

... rosetta is telling me that it has not enough free space to receive work (100.0 MB) You set the amount of space you are willing t let BOINC have in the preferences. There is a constant limit and a limit that is linked to the amount of free space on your own machine. BOINC takes the lower of the two values every time you ask for new work - call this BDS for BOINC disk space Then if you have more than one project, it only allows that project to have its defined share of BDS. So, if Rosetta has 20% resource share, for every 100Mb rosetta needs, you need to have told the prefs that you will allow it to have 500Mb; and the % of free space you defined must come to at least that 500Mb. Things that tend to give the effect you are seeing are therefore - small resource share allocated to Rosetta (you intend to limit the %cpu time but the same share is applied to disk space - fairly full hard disk combined with lowish % free space allocated to BOINC - huge temporary files or huge windows swap file Don't know if you will like the answer but you will at least understand where BOINC is coming from. ... However BOINC anyways seems to be a bit weird and just not the good prog SETI classic was ... Perhaps, like me, you feel that they have not yet got things quite right (why insist on the same resopurce split for time and space for example) but your comparison with SETI classic is unfair, just as my comparison with CPDN classic would be. A lot of the code in BOINC is addressed to issues of sharing a box between separate projects, and that issue just didn't exist in the classic versions of our projects. ... Wherever Seti Classic works flawlessy and fine, BOINC just troubles everywhere ... I guess I am saying, keep up the comments about what you don't like but at the same time be tolerant of the time it takes to solve these problems - the BOINC team have to get it to work with every combination of many projects. ... I wonder why they brought out that crap before testing better until it works as well as seti classic... *sigh* Two reasons. first is that it gives different projects scope for their users to share resources, to the advantage of *every* BOINC project. You will see from my stats how I have flitted around since I moved from CPDN classic to BOINC. second, why should upcoming projects like Rosetta, Orbit, etc need to re-invent those parts of the job that are common to all DC (Distrib Computing) projects? To the immense and justifiable pride of SETI-ists, it was the vision of the SETI programmers that extended the DC parts of their code to other teams. Freeing up the programmers at Rosetta to focus on the biology, freeing up the programmer at Orbit (yes there is only one programmer/scietist on that project) to focus on the celestial machanics. These seem good enough reasons to me to overcme the irritation when BOINC is more clumsy than CPDN classic. I hope coming from SETI you can feel the same, only maybe even more so. Without SETI's generosity and vision there would be a much longer delay bringing Rosetta, Orbit, etc online. And I've never been part of SETI, so I can say that without bias. You can be proud of your background in SETI classic without begrudging your project's generosity in opening the code up to others. |

There is a discourse on this subject over on EaH msg boards; perhaps you've seen it? No Disk Space I think the space calculation is answered there. |

There is a discourse on this subject over on EaH msg boards; perhaps you've seen it? No Disk Space I think the space calculation is answered there. Paul... I do read the Wiki! I have found it a fountain of knowledge all things BOINC. And I understand about the depression thing. I've lived with for the last 25 years. I have a site I'd like to reccommend to you, but I don't want to post it here. Please email me at my KSMarksPsych @ hotmail dot com. Don't give up! As soon as I've finished my round of message boards, I'm off to the Wiki for my daily dose of BOINC knowledge.
