Thank you for clearing up the work button...to me, it is just counterintuitive.

I agree totally - this is the one thing I would most like changed about the current GUI.

But meanwhile we are stuck with it, so here is how to re-program your intuition. The label on the button describes what the button does when clicked, not the state of the setting right now. So therefore it reads the opposite of the state right now.

In my opinion each of the binary choices represented by buttons would be better represented by tick boxes. Allow new work, ticked means yes, unticked means no. Be a lot easier to follow. Similarly with suspend/resume and all the rest.

But if this suggestion is taken up, please use the opposite logic to that used in the command line. Don't allow new work - yes/no is also hard for the intuition to grok instantly.

Woo Wee, I have had decent connection most of the day! I went on the WIKI just to begin trying to learn a little....and I realized that I am really WAY down in the 'computer culture'. I worked in industrial refrigeration service for forty years, going from the stone ages of switches and relays to basically laptop computer control panels. Wound up my career working for one of the largest manufacturers of heavy equipment, on stuff that didnt have a mechanical control in them, just transducers, thermisters, and capabilities we could only dream of a few years ago. I have also built several computers, but none of this required indepth knowledge of the computers, and especially programs, and the language that goes with them. I think as long as Boinc keeps operating as well as it is now, I should be happy. Either that, or take two or three years of computer classes. I probably will still hang around the Wiki, and see if I can upgrade myself at least a little. Thanks

Well, we did make an effort, and still do, to make it as non-technical as possible. Though for the writer it is a little bit of a pain, the standard is to link all the defined terms so that you can always link to the definitions.

One of the things I learned from teaching, most of the time the reason the student is lost is not on the point where they think they are lost, but on the prior concepts. One of those is misunderstood and then when that concept is built upon, there is confusion.

The argument always was, but I understood that!, I don't understand THIS! Yet, it turns out that the prior concept was the problem.

Anyway, IF there are places where we confuse you ... let me know ... maybe they can be fixed ...

I believe you are a very good teacher. May I paraphrase this with what I told my son when he went into school for the same career I had [darn fool, I thought I taught him better}. I told him to learn the basic theory until it was second nature, and all else would be easy.
Although I vaguely know how a computer works, I am not really grounded in them, and especially the programs. No different than trying to explain to a customer why their equipment isnt running...I would be confronted with a blank stare. So, no, the problem isnt yours. By the way, do you ever sleep? :~]
Also, Im not so sure you can make this nontechnical...it is just the nature of the beast.

Well, about that sleep thing ... :)

It is a long story and I will not bore you with it unless you are interested, in which case send me an e-mail and we can talk about if off line. But, my major symptom of depression is a very disturbed sleep cycle. Insomnia at times and inability to stay awake at others... mostly inability to sleep ...

As a BOINC enthusiast, and one that is trying to fill a need, yes, if you don't understand it (the Wiki), I failed. I am not able to do the work required to do major editing right now so that is why the updates are slow and sporatic. But, we can explain things here ...

And, if you point to specifics, and they don't take a lot of research, I can usually manage to do something even now ...

But, I am going to get a bite to eat and then try to take another nap ... :)

May I respectfully submit, from the point of view that I havent the prerequisite grounding in the field, and havent been involved long enough to learn the abreviations, nomenclature, etc, to understand what Im reading, I dont think you have failed. It is sort of like being dropped in the middle of military, who have a language of their own. Most of the posters have no problem.
Also, I havent had the time [partially due to my lousy connection lately] to really dig into it, or use the glossarly properly. My thought is...is there a WIKI for dummies section?
p.s. I thought it would be a good idea to email you, but couldnt find your address..it doesnt show in your profile. pps. I did find the reason for occasionally getting a 'computation error'. So the Wiki does work, even for me.

E-mail ...

Well, on the first page of the Wiki ... :)

p.d.buck@comcast.net

There is no Wiki for Dummies. For one thing, because I don't think there are dummies. I think there are people that do not have knowledge. For example, I would be pretty lost in your field of expertise. Heck, I can't even pound nails well ... :)

BOINC is right down my alley because I have been doing computers professionally and personally since the mid 70's. Both my degrees are in computer areas too ...
